Obtaining an SR22 in Texas

Some high-risk drivers, such as those who have had their license or driving privileges revoked or suspended, may be required by law to file an SR22 in Texas. The SR22 is proof of auto liability insurance and must be provided to the Texas Department of Public Safety as soon as the driver has regained their driving privileges and starts to drive again.

An SR22 can be obtained from auto insurance companies, like Titan Insurance, but it is not a substitute for insurance. It proves to the state that the driver has the required amount of liability insurance from an approved insurer. An insurance provider will notify the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) when an SR-22 is cancelled, terminated or lapses.

When to obtain an SR22

SR22s may be required for:

  • DUI
  • DWI
  • Driving without insurance
  • Suspension of Driver's License
  • Serious car accident

Drivers required to file an SR-22 are required to maintain coverage for two years from the date of conviction or suspension. A valid SR22 must be on file with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) for this entire time. If the Texas SR22 is cancelled, terminated or lapses at any time, the insurer will inform the DPS. Drivers who are required to file an SR22 in Texas and do not, or let the coverage lapse, can lose driving privileges and may have their vehicle registration suspended. An insurance card or policy will not be accepted in place of an SR22 in Texas.

Insurance coverage required by the SR22

To comply with Texas auto liability insurance requirements and obtain an SR22, the following minimum coverages must be maintained:

  • $30,000 for each injured person
  • up to $60,000 total per accident
  • $25,000 for property damage per accident

This minimum Bodily Injury/Property Damage liability limit is called 30/60/25.

Titan Insurance can provide an SR22 when written in conjunction with liability or full coverage policies, but we do not provide Texas SR22 filings for limits of 100,000/300,000/50,000 or higher.

Cost of filing for SR22 insurance in Texas

The costs associated with filing an SR22 in Texas are minimal for each driver requiring a filing.
