Three Things (5/31)

May 31, 2022

1) Demand for robots grows: Orders for workplace robots grew a record 40% in Q1 compared to the year prior as companies struggled to keep up with consumer demand. The use of robots in the U.S. trails other industrialized countries like South Korea, Germany, and Japan. Notably, the food production and pharmaceuticals sectors joined the car makers in their reliance on robots in factories and warehouses.

Titan's Takeaway: Further adoption of new technologies should prove deflationary over time; however, with inflation still at 40-year highs, the economy needs more than a surge in robot orders to bring down prices near-term.

2) Top Gun tops the charts: Paramount Global, in partnership with Skydance Media, gave theaters one of the biggest box office debuts since the pandemic began with their release of Top Gun: Maverick. The sequel to Tom Cruise’s hit 1986 movie brought in an estimated $124 million in ticket sales. According to Paramount, 55% of the audience was over 35.

Titan’s Takeaway: Years of delays pressured Cruise to release the movie via streaming service, but we suspect he knew that Gen X would show up in droves to see the sequel on the big screen. Kudos.

3) Apple VR applies for trademark: RealityOS, the name Apple is reportedly using for their VR/AR operating system, appeared in a trademark filing over the long weekend. The trademark documents reference hardware and software to “design and development” of “computer hardware, software, peripherals, and computer and video games.”

Titan’s Takeaway: Introducing the headset at their developer conference on the 6th could serve as a nice distraction to some investors amidst the sell-off. Others (us) believe it will come down to execution, but who better than Apple to popularize VR/AR.
