Three Things to know (Jan. 19th)

Commentary

“The best customer service is if the customer doesn't need to call you, doesn't need to talk to you. It just works.” - Jeff Bezos

1. Get ready for foldable iPhones with Touch ID and no charging port (maybe)

“Apple Inc. has begun early work on an iPhone with a foldable screen, a potential rival to similar devices from Samsung Electronics Co. and others, though it’s planning only minor changes for this year’s iPhone line. Though overall changes will be minor, Apple is still testing a key upgrade for 2021: an in-screen fingerprint reader. This would add a new method for users to unlock their iPhone, going beyond a passcode and Face ID facial recognition.” (Bloomberg)

2. Marc Lore, Walmart’s eCommerce chief and founder of Jet.com, is stepping down to build the city of the future

“His next big entrepreneurial swing will be something far afield from his current expertise: a multi-decade project to build “a city of the future” supported by “a reformed version of capitalism.” Some who have heard of the project say one focus will be on giving everyday citizens direct economic upside in the city’s growth. “Imagine a city with the vibrancy, diversity and culture of New York City combined with the efficiency, safety and innovation of Tokyo and the sustainability, governance, and social services of Sweden,” reads the vision statement for the project.” (Recode)

3. Dating app Bumble files for an IPO, making it the second major online dating platform to hit US markets

“Bumble, the company best known for its female-centered dating app, is getting ready for its big date with Wall Street. The company filed paperwork on Friday for an initial public offering, potentially setting it up for a Wall Street debut at a time when dating apps have become lifelines for single people during the pandemic. It will list on the Nasdaq under the stock ticker BMBL.” (CNN)
