TITAN'S EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES
operations develop and implement industrial
applications for specialized technologies developed within the Company. Titan has
been successful in the conversion of complex defense technologies to commercial
uses, in the exploitation of several valuable patents, and in the application of
the expertise of its scientific and engineering staff to the development of new
products and services for its commercial and military customers. An important
example of Titan's exploitation of technology is the application of accelerators
and electron beam processing know-how to the commercial sterilization of
disposable medical devices.
The Company's Denver medical device sterilization facility, brought on-line in
1993, is now operating near capacity, while the San Diego facility opened on
schedule in January of 1996 with IMED Corporation as its anchor customer. Both
facilities use Titan's SureBeam® electron beam process, which utilizes patented
and proprietary technology to sterilize disposable medical products. SureBeam®
is a fast, reliable and efficient alternative to existing sterilization methods
such as cobalt-60 radioisotope-based systems and chemical-based systems. The
Company also sold a turnkey electron beam sterilization system to BSE-Mediscan in
Kremsmuenster, Austria. BSE-Mediscan will provide contract sterilization services
in central Europe utilizing Titan's electron beam medical product sterilization
system.
Titan, within its Emerging Technologies segment, also designs and manufactures
high energy accelerators that generate electron beams to meet other industry and
government needs. The Company is developing a high power, compact spiral line
induction accelerator and high power microwave tubes for a variety of
applications. Titan's environmental business has also continued to grow.
Environmental specialists provide comprehensive solutions, using proven and
innovative technologies for environmental control and remediation. Turnkey
service capabilities include strategy development, assessment, and application of
appropriate technologies.
